Youth & Government
Aaliyah Allensworth, Bailey May, Madison Yohe, Rashid Ibrahim, Michael Genaro

From April 20-23, 2022, five MAHS students went to Harrisburg and took on the roles of PA Representatives, Senators, and Reporters at the YMCA Youth & Government Model Government Convention (Model). Students worked all school year to learn the inner workings of State Government and write legislation about changes they’d like to see in our Commonwealth. The student wrote legislation on topics such as 24/7 sobriety programs, the qualified immunity doctrine, wolf sanctuaries, and personal biometric data. They debated all of this on the actual Capitol House and Senate floors.

After two years of virtual Models, seniors Michael Genaro and Bailey May finally got to attend the conference at the Capitol. Senate Majority Whip Genaro and Representative May both debated their bills in committee and Genaro got to see his pass on the Senate floor.

Aaliyah Allensworth was elected Assistant Press Editor in January. She successfully led a group of her peers in submitting daily and meaningful content for the YMCA Y&G social media accounts as well as helping to edit and review content for the each of the daily newspapers of the conference. Allensworth also had the honor of writing the cover story of the weekend’s final paper. She was joined in the Capitol Media Center by Middletown Advisors Camryn Shank and Emily Wolfe.

The Y&G leaders recognized Middletown students for their hard work this year. Back in January, Madison Yohe & Rashid Ibrahim were elected by their peers as Committee Chairs. At Model, they both earned Outstanding Committee Chairs for House and Senate respectively. Both Yohe and Ibrahim also had their bills pass their respected Chambers. The most outstanding honor was that both Yohe and Ibrahim were also selected to represent PA at the Conference on National Affairs in South Carolina this July.

Any MAHS student interested in learning more about how to get involved in the Y&G club for the 2022-23 school year may reach out to club president Yohe or either advisor.
