Learning Garden

Retirement? What’s retirement? For Mrs. Moore it has consisted of getting her hands dirty. When Reid Elementary went silent on March 13, 2020, Reid’s Learning Garden didn’t get the memo. So Mrs. Moore volunteered to keep it thriving all throughout a shutdown, a hot summer, and into the fall when students returned. Mrs. Moore completed all the spring, summer and fall planting and harvesting without the help of her dedicated student gardeners. She continues to tend the garden on the weekends and days off school to prepare it for its winter’s sleep.

The garden’s produce is distributed to classrooms and the cafeteria for sampling, to Reid staff, and to students to take home to their families. This year much of the harvest was given to the Interfaith Food Bank due to the shutdown. Mrs. Moore has championed the garden since its first seed was planted in 2012. Her countless volunteer hours have provided students with agricultural experiences and a new found love of fruits and vegetables. The students get so excited to see what has grown in their garden and are surprised how yummy the produce is. They certainly miss working with Mrs. Moore in person but are grateful for her commitment to being a garden elf behind the fence.
