The Humane Society of Harrisburg received much needed supplies thanks to Fink Elementary students who chose the organization as the recipient of their second trimester service project. Organizer and Fink Elementary teacher Katherine Hutchinson said this particular project was for a community group most could connect with.
As part of the service project students collected funds, and as goals were met, building principal Mrs. Jodi Jackson agreed to a few ‘principal challenges’ like wearing multiple layers of clothing and riding a tricycle. All money raised was used to purchase items for the service project. Students also collected necessities like pet food, treats and paper towels for the shelter.
The service project was a building-wide, all-grade level effort. Kindergarten and first grade students made 450 fleece cat toys and second and third graders made 30 no sew fleece blankets. Fourth and fifth grade students made almost 50 adoption posters for animals that have been at the shelter the longest and even visited the shelter to meet and spend time with the animals they made posters about. Representatives from the Humane Society - and a puppy - also visited with the school to give students and staff an understanding of how meaningful the toys, blankets and posters were to the organization.
We are very proud of our elementary students for thinking of others and the effort put into the project!
