Under the guidance of Gifted Teacher, Mr. Trevor Davis, and fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Janelle Brojakowski, four fifth graders at Reid Elementary entered the Capital Area Intermediate Unit K’Nex STEM Challenge. Joey Berry, Adrik Conrad, Casey Sharp and Alex Murchall spent several weeks problem solving, researching, creating blueprints, and building a prototype of a bus used for public transportation which provides accessibility for physically challenged individuals.

Their double-decker bus included an elevator for handicap access to the second level, floor locks for wheelchairs, and overhead storage for passengers’ belongings so the floors can remain free from trip hazards. Their bus also had designated “IN” and “OUT” entrances to improve traffic flow and ramps at the exits/entrances. The seats were comfortable lounge-type chairs, and some were arranged in groupings to promote socialization and community.

The team presented their prototype virtually to a panel of judges and earned a 3rd place finish. They did a wonderful job showing other school districts what it means to have Raider PRIDE. We are so proud of their hard work and perseverance through this tough challenge!
