Class of 2020 Valedictorian

Angelina Rose Torres is the daughter of Robert & Michele Torres. Torres built an extensive resume during her high school career by participating in a variety of activities: MAHS Pride Club (grade 9); Blue Wave Marching Band and Jazz Band (grade 10); Inspire U.S. Middletown Student Committee (grades 10-11); choir (grades 10-11); MAHS Concert Band (grades 10-11); tennis (grades 10-12), Link Crew (grades 11-12); National Honor Society (grades 11-12); Youth and Government (grades 9-12); and all four fall plays and four spring musicals with the Performing Arts Department. Yet in spite of her busy schedule, Torres managed to stay on the Distinguished Honor Roll for every marking period and also received an AP Scholar With Honor Award from the College Board. Torres was chosen as the October 2019 Student of the Month and was one of two students selected to represent Middletown Area High School and the Hershey Rotary Club as a conferee at the 58th annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference in 2019. In December of 2016, Torres served as a Page during the proceedings of the 58th Pennsylvania Electoral College for the 2016 Presidential Election.

Torres developed her passion for public policy through her involvement in Youth and Government which was instrumental in finalizing her plans to attend Georgetown University to major in government. As a member of the MAHS Youth & Government club, Torres was selected to be one of 24 Pennsylvania delegates for the YMCA’s Conference On National Affairs (CONA) for three consecutive years (grades 9-11) and received the Acknowledgement of Outstanding Student Leadership Award, presented by State Representative Tom Mehaffie, for being selected to represent PA at the 2018 conference. She was voted by hundreds of her peers to receive the 2019 Outstanding Blue Senate Committee Chair Award and was one of two students selected to act as emcees for an after-school and STEM Advocacy Day rally held in the PA state Capitol building. After her undergraduate career, Torres plans to continue her education to earn a law degree and pursue a career in politics.

Alexis Habbershon

Class of 2020 Salutatorian

Alexis J. Habbershon, is the daughter of Scott & Tracy Habbershon. Habbershon participated in the Science Olympiad (grades 9-11) and was a member of the MAHS Brain Busters Quiz Team (grades 10-12). In her junior year, Habbershon received a National Merit Scholar Letter of Commendation for her PSAT score. Habbershon earned Third Place in the Safe2Say statewide Public Service Announcement competition with her video submission.

Habbershon plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology to major in illustration. “Making art is my passion. Telling stories is my passion,” says Alexis. “I love art of all kinds, but I find illustration to be my particular focus.” Habbershon credits Mr. Sean Burke being influential in her pursuit of a career as an illustrator. “In his classes I learned a lot about creative forms of expression not inherently illustrative in nature such as video editing, animating, etc,” says Habbershon. “I still want to make illustration my career, but the things I learned in his classes are going to drive my art for the rest of my life. He also supported me through my anxious moments in his classes in ways that have helped me immensely in my efforts to build confidence.”

Habbershon shared some words of advice for underclassmen: “High school is both more and less important than you think. Don’t try to be like me (in the sense that I’m salutatorian) or like the captain of the football team. Be like yourself, and be aware that that person will change more than once over the course of your high school career. Always give your best, but that won’t always be 100%. Sometimes you have a lot of things on your plate, and your best for a given task might not look like it to others.”
