While math was the subject at hand at the annual MATHCOUNTS regional competition, Middletown Area Middle School (MAMS) MATHCOUNTS team members Joseph Berry, Adrik Conrad, Bryce Foose, Marissa McDaid, Patrick Muller, Kripa Sanjel, and Casey Sharp, all eighth graders, along with seventh graders Alyx Carnes and Jacquelyn Mick, and sixth graders Elias Foose and Owen Riggs, made history by being the first MAMS group to have a student finish in the top ten and the first time MAMS brought home three trophies.
MATHCOUNTS is a national program for sixth, seventh and eighth graders to promote excellence in math through coaching and competition.
The MAMS MATHCOUNTS group has been practicing since the beginning of the school year and are coached by Mr. Mark Mohar, MAMS math teacher.
Casey, Alyx, Kripa, and Joseph represented MAMS in team competition. They finished in fifth place and received two trophies, including one for their fifth place finish, and one for being the most improved team from last year.
Casey scored the fourth highest in individual competition earning her a spot in the Countdown Round, which determined the top ten students. She ultimately finished fifth out of almost 100 students. She received a trophy for her performance as well.
Other notable accomplishments include Joseph finishing 14th overall in individual competition and Alyx finishing 27th overall as a seventh grader. Coach Mohar said this is a great achievement in individual competition for a seventh grade student.
Congratulations to the MATHCOUNTS team and thank you to Coach Mohar for inspiring our math students!
