Reid Elementary students, families, and staff had a delicious time together learning more about math at the school’s pizza and fractions night.
The event was organized by MASD Math Coach Mrs. Lori Miller and each student was provided with a pizza shell, sauce, cheese, and pepperoni, courtesy of MASD’s food service provider
Metz Culinary Management. Families followed directions from Mrs. Miller to use measuring cups and spoons to personalize their pizzas. While the pizzas were cooking,
she had some questions about fractions for the chefs, and when the pies came out of the oven, gave directions to students like first grader Kaylen Chimm (pictured) for slicing the dinner into different fractions.
The fractions lesson didn’t end with dinner. Participants created a personalized dessert snack mix using ratios of Chex Mix, chocolate, M&Ms, and pretzels.
Improving math aptitude and promoting a positive outlook and attitude toward the subject is a top priority of MASD. We want students to master basic math principles and develop them into confident and enthusiastic math students while experiencing fun, intrigue, and excitement as they explore the world of math. In Mrs. Miller’s role as a math coach she works alongside classroom teachers to provide an increased focus on math instruction and improve practices in math classes for students in grades K-8.
