Health and Safety Plan

Monday, July 19, 2021

Hello, Middletown Families, Teachers and Staff:

I want to provide you with an update on where the District is with regard to our mitigation efforts for a safe and orderly return to school on August 30, 2021. On Friday, July 9, 2021, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) announced they would be aligning themselves with what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would endorse regarding the mitigation strategies to stop the spread of COVID-19. On July 12, 2021, PDE put out a statement requiring all students who ride a school vehicle to wear a mask. In addition, the CDC has recommended that any person who is not vaccinated should wear a mask while in school. It is important to note that this is a recommendation and not a requirement as is the case for face coverings while riding a school vehicle.

Therefore, the District will make the wearing of face coverings inside District buildings a recommendation, not a requirement, for all students and staff who remain unvaccinated. In addition, any outside visitors to the District will be required to wear a face covering while inside District facilities due to the difficulties of contact tracing non-district personnel. Middletown will still continue to follow COVID-19 mitigation strategies maintaining 3 feet of physical distance between students in classrooms when possible.

The extended version of COVID-19 mitigation strategies that the District will follow will be updated in the full Health and Safety Plan and will be available on the District website in the middle of August after Board approval. The Plan that is posted below is a simplified and more condensed version of the COVID-19 mitigation strategies that satisfy the requirement for the District to receive ARP ESSER funds. We wanted to inform all parents and staff that face coverings will be optional and that all students and staff will follow 3 feet social distancing guidelines when possible. Hopefully, this information will provide you with the details to send your students back to school knowing the District is trying to plan for a sense of normalcy for the fall of 2021. We will continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC, PDE and the Pennsylvania Department of Health and adjust our Health and Safety Plan when appropriate.
