Superintendent Transition

Wednesday, May 19, 2021

Dear MASD Parent/Guardian:

During the May 17th School Board General Business meeting, the School Board voted to accept my letter of retirement as Superintendent of Schools effective August 27, 2021. It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve the students and families of Middletown Area School District over the last nine (9) years as Superintendent of Schools, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Immediately following the approval of my retirement, the School Board then took action to appoint Dr. Chelton Hunter (current Assistant to the Superintendent) as the next Superintendent of Schools effective August 28, 2021 and approved his employment contract for a three-year term. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hunter on this next step in his professional career. I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Hunter for many years and believe that he will do a fine job leading the District in the years to come. Over the next three months, I will work closely with Dr. Hunter to ensure a smooth transition of leadership for the opening of the 2021-22 school year. The Board has asked that Dr. Hunter begin building his leadership team; therefore, yesterday he announced to employees his intent to promote Mr. Christopher Sattele (current MAMS Principal) to the role of High School Principal effective July 1, 2021 (pending formal Board approval on June 8, 2021) to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Dr. Michael Carnes effective June 30, 2021. Additionally, Ms. Marie Drazenovich, Fink Elementary School Principal, has also announced her retirement effective June 30, 2021. Dr. Hunter will soon begin interviewing candidates for their replacements as well as vacancies that exist for Assistant to the Superintendent, High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.

The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly taught everyone that change is inevitable. Although at times change can be unsettling, it can also be a time of growth and excitement. The School Board and Administration appreciate your ongoing support during this transition.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lori A. Suski
Superintendent of Schools
