Heroes Behind the iPads

Mike Riazy, Thomas Bruno and James Vernon

In recent months, the MASD Information Technology Department welcomed several new faces. We were just about to introduce them to you when school suddenly came to a screeching halt and our energies were unexpectedly turned in a new direction. Little did we know how much that new direction would demand of our recent hires in the tech department.

At the start of the school year, Thomas Bruno entered middle school life as the Computer Technician at MAMS. However, he graduated quickly from MAMS and moved into a position that came available at MAHS. It was then that Mike Riazy joined Raider Nation to fill Thomas’s shoes at MAMS. But the changes didn’t stop there. When the elementary tech position became vacant, James Vernon rounded out the team and became the third new face of the MASD technology team.

Just a few short weeks later, the job descriptions of the three technicians were suddenly turned upside down. Schools closed. Doors closed. Computers slowed down. But just around the corner, school was about to be run 100% by technology; and the 3 techs were ready for the challenge. When they heard they had only three days to prepare 1100 iPads for elementary students, they put their tech brains together, figured out a way to expedite the process, and said, “We got this.” Bruno, Riazy and Vernon worked a collective 130 hours in 3 days so an iPad could be handed to each mini-Raider so their learning process could continue.

Tech faces are usually unseen. They tend to like to hide behind the screens, work remotely and remain invisible. But not these guys. They are looking forward to building relationships with students and teachers, forging new working relationships, create supportive partnerships and being visible. At some point you’ll get to cross paths with them. And when you do, be sure to give them a pat on the back and a thanks for tackling this uncharted territory.
