Welcome to the Robert G Reid Elementary School. Home of the Blue Raiders!

The Robert G. Reid Elementary School was named for a man who has dedicated his life to community service and the students of the Middletown Area School District. Robert G. Reid first entered the Middletown School system in 1938 and was a member of the graduating Class of 1950. After attending college and spending time in the army, he returned to his hometown to begin his teaching career as a sixth grade teacher. After 39 years of service and having taught in just about every district school building, including the Wood Street, Grandview, Mansberger, Feaser, and High Schools, he officially retired on June 15, 1993. During his years as a teacher, he brought many resources to the school in an effort to impress upon his students the importance of community service and to instruct them in the practical aspects of our democratic system of government. Not only did he teach the subject of government, but he served as a role model for students to emulate.

Mayor Reid has devoted his life to community service. He served on Borough Council for ten years from January of 1968 through January of 1978 and Mayor of Middletown for approximately 16 years from 1978 through 1994 before resigning. He then devoted approximately 10 years to Dauphin County as court administrator. After retiring a second time, he returned to his first two careers—Mayor of the Borough of Middletown and a substitute teacher for the Middletown Area School District.

He has served the students of this district as a teacher for more than four decades and represented the interests of this community for almost 3 decades. Along the way, there were many notable accomplishments:

  • The first African American elected to the office of Mayor in the state of Pennsylvania
  • The longest serving mayor in the Borough of Middletown
  • A Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist in 1983

In October of 2002, the Board of School Directors voted to name the new elementary school in his honor. We are all better for the fact that he chose to make Middletown his home.
