Transportation Services

It is the Middletown Area School District’s goal to provide safe and efficient transportation to all eligible students. We pride ourselves in ensuring that your child’s ride to and from school is both a safe and an enjoyable experience. Eligibility for bus transportation is based upon established criteria such as distance to the school, road types, traffic patterns, geographical area, and other contributing factors to the assignment of bus routes and stops. Each eligible student, for whom transportation is provided, shall be assigned to a specific bus route and bus stop.

Bus transportation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is NOT mandatory, although the District has extended this privilege to all eligible students living within the established boundaries of the Boroughs of Middletown and Royalton, and Lower Swatara Township. The District is committed to the equitable treatment of all eligible students. Serious acts of misconduct, including but not limited to any bullying behavior, that may be detrimental to the health, safety, or well-being of other individuals may result in the immediate suspension of riding privileges for indefinite periods of time.

Change in Bus Route/Bus Stop Assignments

Students are NOT permitted to transfer to a different bus route and/or bus stop without the prior approval of the MASD Transportation Department.  If for any reason a change to a student’s bus route or bus stop is necessary, a parent/guardian must submit a “Bus Route / Bus Stop Change Form” to the MASD Transportation Department (see right side of this webpage under Documents & Forms). Completed forms can be dropped off at any MASD location or:

The MASD Transportation Department will contact you after the review of a change request, and they will generally take effect within 48 hours after receipt.

The determination of each change request will be reviewed by the MASD Transportation Department and will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. An existing bus route operates to and from the student’s assigned school.
  2. The bus route does not have to be changed or extended.
  3. The bus stop exists on the bus route; a new bus stop will not be created.
  4. The passenger capacity on the vehicle will not exceed the legal limits for the vehicle.
  5. The change is requested for a specific and reasonable period of time.
  6. The above criteria will be superseded, if reassignment is mandated by local, state, or federal authorities.

Alternate Pickup/Drop Off

An alternate pick up or drop off location for your child will be considered by MASD in order to accommodate daycare or babysitter arrangements. Transportation to or from an alternate location other than the student’s home, such as a daycare or babysitter, may be permitted under normal circumstances. By requesting an alternate pick up or drop off location, your child may be reassigned to a different school building within the district. The following guidelines exist regarding these changes:

  1. The alternate pick up/drop off location may be either to or from school.
  2. The alternate pick up/drop off location must be along an established route and at an existing bus stop.
  3. Alternate Locations will be for the entire school week (Monday to Friday).
  4. The number of alternate location changes per school year may be limited by MASD.
  5. A “Bus Route/Bus Stop Change Form” must be completed.

Transportation lists are distributed to each building administrator, office staff, teachers and drivers to ensure students safety.
