On Tuesday, April 24th, 32 gifted fifth-graders from the Derry Township, Lower Dauphin, and Middletown School Districts participated in the first annual Tri-District Challenge Day. The day-long event was held at Londonderry Elementary School. Students were not told what their challenge would be until they arrived that morning. After hearing the welcome address by Lower Dauphin Superintendent, Sherri Smith, and an informative presentation by Mr. Kent Bachmann, Director of Design and Engineering at Hershey Park, the students learned they would be creating a working amusement park ride for a family of “riders” (ping-pong balls and marbles) out of recycled materials. Within each of the eight groups they were tasked with brainstorming ideas for designs which included the following : a ride for riders of various sizes that lasts at least 5 seconds; space for riders to wait in line (queuing); safety signs with warnings for the riders; and attractive themed scenery. Upon completion of the ride construction, each group chose a spokesperson to present their ride to the group and demonstrate its use with a rider. At this time a group of ride evaluators from Hershey Park judged each ride and prepared an official rating for each member based on criteria such as: uniqueness of the design; functionality; safety; rider needs; and visual appeal. Eight successful rides were created that day and many new friendships formed.

The fourth and fifth grade students from Cindy Strachan’s learning support class at Robert Reid Elementary had their cookie business up and running again this year. “Chocolate Delight Bakery” sold 110 dozen cookies this year! A special thank-you goes to Mrs. June Martin and the ladies from the Evangelical United Methodist Church, Middletown, PA for baking all of the cookies. Last year some of the profit went to the Humane Society. This year a $300 donation was given to the Middletown Food Pantry. Mark Shipkowski, a volunteer from the food pantry came in to talk to the students about the food pantry and the class gave him their donation. The great thing about doing a project like this is the hands-on learning experience the students get by “owning” their own business. Many academic skills were involved with this project such as reading, math, language arts, and speech/language skills to name a few. The students were excited to be able to give back to their community.

The second year of the rainforest project in the 6th grade Geography class at Middletown Area Middle School was twice as successful as last year. The class of 2011-2012 raised $2,000 in one week to buy rainforest land in South America and keep it from being destroyed. They raised the money by selling tickets for root beer floats and also by getting donations from people in the community. This year the project reached across the entire 6th grade curriculum. All of the 6th grade MAMS teachers put together a lesson that was specific to their curriculum about an aspect of the rainforest and how it is being affected by the current unfortunate trend of destroying the rainforests at a rate of 100 acres per minute.

The 6th grade Geography teachers Llewellyn Skees and Wayne Lohrenz partnered with the non-profit organization World Land Trust US to save acres of rainforest. World Land Trust US has saved more than 2 million acres of rainforest in its 23 years of conservation work. The students were able to choose the specific rainforests that they wanted to save based on what animals are endangered and where the rainforests are located. This year’s top seller was Jared Knaub who raised $210 himself. By raising $2,000 they were able to buy 20 acres to add to the ten acres purchased last year. The class of 2011-2012 will receive a certificate from World Land Trust US for its efforts.

Don’t miss this year’s hilarious 8th Grade Operetta, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE! Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. Four audience members have the opportunity to participate in the bee as well, making no two performances of the show alike! Do YOU have what it takes to take home the trophy?

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a hilarious tale of overachievers’ angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Don’t miss this fun-filled, interactive evening of laughs! We hope to see you there!

Each year students from across the state join together to participate in the YMCA’s Model Government Convention. During the convention the students take over the state capital building to setup and run their own mock government. Each student has a designated or elected role, from Governor to Judge.

Two MASD students, Austin Coble and Lydia Hursh, both had their bills signed into law by the Youth Governor. Having a bill signed into law requires the student to first present their bill to Committee. If voted on and passed by Committee the bill then moves on to the House Chambers, where if passed moves on to the Youth Governor to be signed into law.

Lydia’s bill proposed the establishment of a Youth Advisory Council, while Austin’s bill proposed making it illegal in Pennsylvania to smoke in a car with a minor present.

Another MASD student, John Hursh, received a Bill Citation Award recognizing his bill as being well-researched and well-written. His bill proposed a requirement that all local PA governments fly only flags made in Pennsylvania. It also had a grant incentive program for flag makers to build green factories.

East Shore YMCA Adviser and State Judicial Coordinator, Desiree Brougher said, “Both John and Lydia (both middle school students) did a great job working and meeting the same expectations set forth for our high school students.”

On Friday, April 13th, the faculty and staff of the Robert G. Reid Elementary School participated in the “Purple Up For Military Kids.” This is the 2nd year for this event that is sponsored by the 4-H Youth Development program of the Penn State Cooperative Extension and Operation Military Kids. The color purple symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue. The Robert G. Reid Elementary School hopes to make this an annual event.
