March 16, 2012 in News by John Brougher

On Thursday, March 8th, the 5th grade students at Kunkel Elementary in the Middletown Area School District participated in Kunkel’s 1st ever PSSA Olympics. The “Olympics” were designed to be a fun way to help the students review skills in reading and math that they had learned throughout the year. Throughout the day students participated in stations such as math and reading jeopardy, a measurement race, and a station where the students measured and found the area and perimeters of objects on the playground!

On the day following the Olympics, students were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based off of their performances. Despite what “level” of medal, all the students did a great job and had a fun day to prepare for the PSSAs .

Kunkel Students Jump Rope for Heart

March 5, 2012 in News by John Brougher

Students at Kunkel Elementary School participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart Event on Friday, February 24, 2012. Jump Rope for Heart is an annual fundraiser and educational program that all three of our Middletown Area Elementary Schools participate in each year to teach our students about their heart and what is necessary to be heart healthy throughout a lifetime. Jump Rope for Heart also helps the American Heart Association to raise critical funds to continue to research better ways to fight heart disease and stroke; America’s #1 and #3 killers.

During the day, all students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade had the opportunity to come to the gym and participate in various jump rope stations, races, long rope skills, survivor jump competitions and many other fun activities. Several of our student’s parents and Kunkel staff members also came in throughout the day to help make the even such a huge success and lots of fun for our Kunkel students.

This year our Kunkel students raised almost $10, 500 for the American Heart Association during our Jump Rope for Heat Event. Our top student fundraiser was fifth grade student Marley Kinsey, who raised over $1,500 herself for the event. This is the second straight year that Marley raised over $1,000 for the American Heart Association during Jump Rope for Heart.

Friend Named “Smarty”

October 18, 2011 in Spotlight by John Brougher

Students in Mrs. Ebersole’s class have a new friend named “Smarty”. Smarty is the nickname for the new Smartboard that was installed in the classroom this summer as part of the district’s GetSmart initiative. A Smartboard is an interactive display that allows teachers and students to interact with a computer using special pens, erasers, or just their fingers.

Mrs. Ebersole’s students work with Smarty in many different subject areas. One lesson focused on spelling and used various styles of hands-on learning, from paper and scissors to using the Smartboard. The students started by cutting out small letter tiles and when asked about Smarty, Mrs. Ebersole replied, “We are learning more about the Smartboard every day and the kiddos have even taught me some things as they are not afraid to experiment!”forming words at their seat. Next, individual students stepped up to work with Smarty using a program called Fridge Magnets. The program simulates letters that look like old-fashioned refrigerator magnets and allows the student to easily maneuver them to make a word. Once the student has arranged the letters to make a word, all of the other students in class wrote it down, concentrating on both their spelling and their handwriting skills. Lastly, students focused on forming other words by just changing one letter (for example, box to fox) and arranging the words by word families or by words that rhyme.

When asked about Smarty, Mrs. Ebersole replied, “We are learning more about the Smartboard every day and the kiddos have even taught me some things as they are not afraid to experiment!”
