Mason Garza, Class of 2019, is headed to Lebanon Valley College to major in Analytical Finance in hopes of securing a job in the field of corporate business. “LVC is rated #1 in the country for job placement so I’m basically guaranteed a job after college.” That, in addition to their good food, is one of the reasons Garza chose LVC. “They are known for their math business program. I really like the campus and the small class size and I like that it’s close by,” added Garza.

As an accepted LVC student, Garza received an email that included an announcement that intrigued him. LVC was accepting applications for gamers for their newly formed eSports team. If accepted to the team, students would receive a $2500 scholarship per year to play online competitive collegiate gaming. One of the nine games played on the college level is Rocket League which just happens to be Garza’s wheelhouse. “So why not apply? I was already attending there so why not get a scholarship to go with it?”

Garza met with the LVC eSports coaches and immediately impressed them with this Rocket League skills. They knew they needed Garza’s skills for that specific game as they were building their team. On Thursday, March 14, 2019, David Shapiro, Chief Information Officer of LVC, presented Garza with his team jersey and an LVC eSports hoodie. In attendance for the presentation were the eSports Head Coach and the Rocket League Coach. Just like a college athlete, Garza will need to practice a required number of hours per week prior to his start at LVC. He will practice with the team and work with coaches throughout the season.

“What makes eSports fun is mainly the competitive aspect. When you’re playing with your friends and family you’re just having a fun time and you eventually get bored because you hit a ceiling of what you can do. With competition it’s more challenging and there are incentives to work towards like scholarship money when you win.”

Because eSports is an online competition, Garza will face teams from all around the nation with no need for travel. But that’s not unusual for him. Garza recently placed in the top 100 in the WORLD in a Call of Duty competition. LVC might not realize all they are getting with their latest recruit.

LVC’S PRESENTATION TO MASON GARZA WILL BE AIRED ON FOX43 NEWS ON THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2019 AT 10PM.
