Leiby Selected for State Jazz Band

Leiby.Connor BANN

Connor Leiby, Class of 2020, has been selected by audition to be a member of the 19-piece All State Jazz Band. With only two alto saxophone seats up for grabs, 27 students from around the state battled for the coveted spots. Connor submitted five audition recordings which earned him the right to sit in one of those seats; a feat which has never been accomplished by a Middletown student.

Connor picked up his first alto sax as a fourth grader at Kunkel under the direction of Elementary Band Teacher, Ms. Catherine Kaslusky. It didn’t take long to realize that Connor and the alto sax were a perfect match. That same year, Connor began private lessons with Mr. Sam Fisher then added lessons with a jazz sax instructor at Lebanon Valley College during 8th grade. Connor has spent his last four years honing his craft on the alto sax and still has his senior year ahead of him to continue making Middletown history.

Connor will rehearse and perform with the All State Jazz Band in Pittsburgh the first week of April. Connor plans to follow that experience with an audition for the All National Honor Jazz Ensemble which could send him to Florida in November.
