MAHS Teachers Wow Conference Guests

On Tuesday, February 13, 2018, Middletown Area High School teachers, Rebecca Kotzman, Ashley Kessel, and Tiffany Lewis, presented a session entitled “Blended Learning: The New Wave of Education?” at the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference (PETE&C) in Hershey, PA. Their presentation focused on the innovative way Middletown uses online education to reach the needs of its students. Attendees of the presentation were interested to learn how this instructional strategy opens more opportunities for students in a small district.

PETE&C sessionWhat exactly is Blending Learning? It is an instructional technique that combines online and in-class learning activities designed so that part of the instruction can occur outside of the classroom. This provides more flexibility for students to take other classes concurrently with their blended class and receive individualized instruction. The topic was so popular at the conference that the room hit maximum capacity and some conference participants had to be turned away. Despite teaching in different subject areas – Mrs. Kotzman in Social Studies, Mrs. Kessel in English, and Mrs. Lewis in Biology – the three teachers shared their most effective common resources with a captivated audience. So captivated in fact, the room remained packed well after the session was over as attendees stayed to ask the Middletown teachers additional questions. The PETE&C coordinators were so impressed by the Middletown teachers’ presentation and asked the teachers to return for an encore performance!
